The first Private
Investigator that was known to the world was
FRANCES EUGENE VIDOCQ
He was a Frenchman and became famous because the local papers wrote of
his investigation exploits in Paris
1775-1857
he lived...most famous after
1840’s.
Because of those
writings…fiction writers like Dickens…Conan Doyle and Edgar Allen Poe were
influenced…so by the time the 30’s rolled around here in America writers had
plenty of PI stories to mull over and copy from.
America’s famous Private
detective was ALLAN PINKERTON…He, according to historians saved
Abe Lincoln on his way to to his inauguration…He had the first PI agency in
America… on his business cards he had
the eye of a man…”We Never Sleep’ was his motto…he had operatives that
eventually spread across the United States.
He got a lot of publicity and there too was the material for PI, mystery
and story tellers to steal from and embellish.
He created the Secret Service Office with a directive from Lincoln

Not all PI’s have the skills
or wherewithal to do all kinds of jobs.
The police are in the same fix, and they too break there departments
down from Traffic to Homicide.
Big PI Agencies have a
multiple number of different ‘ experts’
and they can do remarkable things. The Police have a restricted area they can
work in and of course so do the PI’S.
Truth is many Private Eyes break all kinds of rules. The police do too…but they are under the
public scrutiny a lot more than the average PI.

Asset Search: Who has money…property and is it hidden?
Auto Theft: Cops are busy..a PI will look long and hard
for your missing car.
Background Checks: Today’s PI ..the good ones are computer geeks
and hackers. They can find out an awful lot about a person.
Bail Enforcement: Bondsmen hire Private eyes to FIND the bad
guy.
Corporate Sleuths: Companies hire private eyes to snoop around
the business checking on employees…they are hired as undercover employees.
Child Support: Dads love to cheat their x wives out of
support money. Private eyes make a
living finding these losers.
Criminal
Investigations: Some Private eyes are
hired to help in criminal cases…even murder...but they have to walk softly…and
stay out of the cop’s way. They also do
criminal background checks.
Divorce: Private eyes are the main source of information
against spouses. Certainly any good lawyer has access to a good PI and they get
evidence in disputed child custody and grounds for divorce.
Insurance Claims: Some private investigators are hired by
insurance companies that do not have an adjuster in the area…Many are checking
on legality of the claim and questions concerning injury and permanent claims
of loss work.
